The American Revolution: Unity vs. Division
A common theme throughout this course has been the history of The United States as a story of the coexistence of both unity and diversity. This is evident even in the American Revolution, in which 13 British colonies became an independent nation.
For this short essay, you need to explore this theme in an essay between one and a half pages, and two full pages maximum (usual format, arial font 11, double-spaced). The parts of chapters 4 and 5 that discuss the War will be your main source of information.
In the essay, you should:
- include an introduction which makes the purpose of the essay clear.
- follow the introduction with a paragraph in which you explain how the War actually united13 colonies that were not united at all before the War.
- then write one or two paragraphs in which you discuss examples ofdivisions that existed in American society during the conflict, both despite, and because of the War.
- end your essay with a conclusion, in which you argue which of the two aspects of the war you discussed in the body of your essay (unity or division) YOUfeel was more characteristic of the War itself…was the War more a story of unity, or a story of divisions…
- for the purposes of this essay, you need to choose one or the other (unity or divisions)…you cannot simply say it was a mix, or that both were equally important.
- and, in the conclusion, make your opinion clear without using the first person “I” (you can write something like…”this essay shows…”, etc.).
I hope you find the topic interesting, and I look forward to reading what you write!
